You will need 36" approximately from the center of your hitch ball to the back window of the truck. There are many myths about towing and many installers are really clueless. The facts are that you can use a short bed truck on a trailer with a full nose (not tapered) and be okay. The key is to put the ball in the correct place. Many bolt in style hitches will automatically bolt to your chassis 6" approximately in front of the center of the rear axle. However, in today's markets, tow ratings are increasing and truck bed sizes are decreasing resulting in a need to move the center of the ball farther away from the cab of the truck (36" needed). The above style hitch can be installed where you need it. In some cases, if cross rails on your truck prevent you from being 36" from the center of the cab, you may use an offset hitch on the trailer costing $300 and this will gain you 9" additional clearance from your cab.
