Winter Horse Trailer Maintenance

Horse Trailer Maintenance
posted December 16th

Anyone who owns a horse trailer knows the best way to extend the life and usefulness of it is by maintaining it. And maintenance should be a year round habit especially if you use your horse trailer regularly.

With winter here, two areas that you should definitely check are your horse trailer’s tires and the electrical system.

If you live in a cold, snowy climate, you want to be sure that the tires you’re hauling on are in good condition with no wear or dry rot. You also need to check the air pressure in all of the tires. Incorrectly inflated tires can make hauling more difficult and leave you open to problems that you don’t want to have to deal with on the road, especially a snow covered, icy one. And remember to check that all’s well with the spare, too.

Confirm that the electrical system is up-to-snuff as well. Your brake lights, back up lights, directionals, and running lights should all work. And don’t forget to check the trailer’s interior light too. Imagine trying to load your horse in the dark.

If you find anything that isn’t functional, fix or replace it immediately. If you put it off, the chances of you taking care of it become slimmer and the chances of you regretting your procrastination become greater. And believe me, changing a flat tire on a horse trailer is pain enough.  But changing it on a cold, dark, snowy road is the total pits.

Avoid these problems. Always be sure that your rig is travel-ready.
