A Word about Horse Trailer Insurance

If you’re thinking about buying a new or used horse trailer, you’ve probably wondered if you should insure it.

Generally speaking, any coverage for your trailer comes through the existing policy on your tow vehicle. This extended coverage would take care of liability, collision, etc. Your best bet is to contact your insurance agent and discuss the details of your impending trailer purchase. Your agent can advise you of options and cost.

Your tow vehicle’s policy covers the physical horse trailer, but what about its contents? If you store lots of expensive equipment and tack in your trailer, it’s important to know that these items, if stolen or damaged, may be covered under your homeowner’s or renter’s policy. Once again, a chat with your insurance agent can clarify what’s covered and what’s not.

And speaking of the contents of the trailer, the most important content is your horse. He is not covered under either of the policies previously mentioned. To insure your equine, you’ll need to take out a separate insurance policy. This would cover him should he injure himself or worse while on a trailer trip.

Whether to insure is for the most part, a matter of dollars and cents and the final decision is yours.

Unfortunately, trailer accidents do happen and horse trailers do get stolen. You may determine that insuring is not necessary for you, but doing some preliminary research on the pros and cons is worthwhile. Like any type of insurance, when you need it, you’re always glad you have it.
