Located on ten beautiful wooded acres in Magnolia, Texas, JoyRide Center’s facility is a peaceful, serene place of healing and joy. There are several riding areas on the property, including a covered arena, a sensory course, and an adventure trail that lines the perimeter. Besides the beautiful nature surrounding the facility, in their indoor space they have both a therapy room and a classroom, both used in their programs.
Competence and community play a large role in the programs at JoyRide. They provide opportunities for all participants to develop life skills to participate in and contribute to their community. Their mission is to help people find more joy in life. Terri Norris from JoyRide shares, “believing in the unique abilities within all people, JoyRide Center strives to be a place where the impossible can become possible.”
Programs offered at JoyRide include hippotherapy, therapeutic horsemanship, riding competitions, and a day habilitation program. The day habilitation program started as a pilot program in 2013. It was designed for young adult riders, and was highly successful. JoyRide expanded the program and started offering it two days a week in 2015, and this fall they will begin offering it four days a week. They are the only therapeutic riding center that offers this type of program.
Unlike other programs, JoyRide offers hippotherapy with a licensed physical therapist. This allows them to work with more people, including those that have been turned down from other programs. Riders of all ages, from 3 to 84, and from all backgrounds are welcome at JoyRide.
At JoyRide, it’s about quality, not quantity. The focus is not on the number of people the help, but rather, reaching out to the one, and providing that one person with the highest quality of services that they can provide.
Terri shares, “Our clients tell us that coming to JoyRide is much more than just a therapy session. We pride ourselves on providing a family style atmosphere where clients and their families can make new friends, spend time with old friends and also experience the benefits of the unique therapy we provide.”
This family style atmosphere makes JoyRide special, and makes it a welcoming place for people with all different types of disabilities. The mother of one JoyRide client shared, “It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful. Everyone here is joyful, so the name.”
